Accessing records held by the Archives

Access to records held by the National Archives will depend on the age and condition of the record.

Records not in the open access period can be retrieved and accessed on your agency's premises. For more information, see Retrieving records from the National Archives.

If a record is in the open access period, it is available for public access and cannot be removed from the Archives. These records can be accessed in one of our reading rooms.

The Archives also provide a digitized lending option. Records accessed this way will be delivered using a secure electronic transfer. Charges apply for records requiring digitisation. From 1 January 2018 this service will be a mandatory service and replace the lending of unclassified physical files.

If your agency is required to provide access to its records for a legal proceeding or discovery order, see Access to records for legal proceedings.
